What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are natural by-products of normal metabolic and cellular processes in the body and can also be generated during exposure to certain
drugs, environmental contaminants, and ionizing radiation (e.g., X-rays, gamma rays, ultraviolet radiation). Free radicals can be highly reactive and damage important large molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, as well as deplete critical antioxidant molecules such as glutathione, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E. Oxygen radicals are one class of reactive agents that can initiate "chain reactions", particularly in the lipid bilayer of cell membranes. This uncontrolled molecular damage can lead to extensive cell and tissue injury and may be responsible for a number of diseases.
